Both the International English Language Testing Service and the Test of English as a Foreign Language are accepted at universities around the world. Both of these exams measure how well those who do not speak English as a first language read, write, speak and hear English. In general the prices for both tests can run the same. The cost is not necessarily based on a global set amount for each test, but it depends on the location where you take the test. On the low end, this will cost about $150, and on the high end, about $250. Click here to find TOEFL preparation centres in India.

General Differences

The essay section of the TOEFL also requires typing. If you cannot type, it may be best for you to take the IELTS, which allows you to submit handwritten essays. If longer tests tend to make you more nervous, the IELTS is the best choice. It lasts for 2 hours and 45 minutes, while the TOEFL lasts for 4 hours. Also, if you are looking for a variety of question types, the IELTS test is the best option with fill-in-the-blanks, multiple choice and matching questions. The TOEFL is mostly multiple choice.

Speaking Section and Typing

The speaking section of the exams is one of the first things that marks them as different. The IELTS requires test takers to speak responses to an examiner face to face. The TOEFL exam provides a microphone for responses. If this is the deciding factor for you, your comfort level with the examiner will direct your choice of tests. Some people are more comfortable if another person is not sitting in front of them waiting for an answer. Others need a live body for reassurance.

U.S. or British English

The exams also give university applicants a change to take test their knowledge of either American or British English. The TOEFL is given in U.S. English. It is created and given by the Educational Testing Service based near Princeton University. ETS does standardized tests for students in kindergarten through 12th grade and also administers the Graduate Record Examination required to get accepted to most graduate schools in the U.S.

The British Council, University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations and IDP Education Australia does the IELTS in British English. The British Council brings material in British English to people all over the world. Although British and U.S. English have a lot of words and meanings in common, the subtle differences could make a difference in scoring for some students.

The scoring of both exams is also different. The IELTS gives test takers a score between 0 and 9, including half points. The TOEFL totals your results from all areas and gives a composite average much like the Scholastic Aptitude Test.
